Mexican Wolf Recovery

Wolves fed upon cow while alive, 20 + pounds of muscle tissue eaten out around back end and pelvis. Wolves leave; cow stressed and tries to birth calf.   • Wolves first began colonizing northwest Montana near Glacier National Park in the early 1980s.
  • Wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park and the central Idaho wilderness in 1995 and 1996.

Buckley: Wolves near our Campground

In the summer of 2009, we planned a week long camping trip at Takhlakh Lake, near Mt. Adams in Washington State.

A wolf pack had been terrorizing campers. Had a couple of guys treed in their pickup cab all night at Colson Creek campground. They are not afraid of humans or campsites.

Beers: “Science” as Dogma

A federal Wildlife Refuge in north central Montana that was once famous for pheasant hunting is steadily ridding the refuge of pheasants. Russian olive, a medium size tree that once spotted the refuge, has been cut down and piled in heaps. This shrub is an important winter cover for pheasants (especially during blizzards) and the fruit is a preferred food for pheasants as well as sharp-tail grouse, cedar waxwings, robins, grosbeaks, quail, and elk (per the 1951 American Wildlife and Plants, A Guide to Wildlife Food Habits). Beers: Two Lessons From Montana

Lesson #1:

While bouncing over dusty Montana dirt roads recently in search of wily sharptails, Hungarian partridges, and sage grouse a humorous example of (federal) governmental “do as I say, not as I do” occurred to me.

Most of Montana, like most of the West, is a patchwork-hodgepodge of public/private land ownership.  Bureau of Land Management, National Forest, National Park, and National Wildlife Refuge lands abut the County and State roads along with ranchers, farmers, retirees, and other rural residents. The period 1967 to 1999 saw the passage of 3 Endangered Species Acts and a tightening of federal authority over a host of plants and animals formerly under the jurisdiction of state governments. Mr. Beers’ was employed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in many capacities and locations during this period. He explains the growth of federal power, the shift in the sort of employees and agendas responsible for the federal growth, and the resulting subversion of state fish and wildlife agencies and any respect for law by increasingly powerful bureaucrats. Eastman: Decline of elk and elk depredation by wolves

There are several factors that have contributed to the elk population crash. There has been a steady decline from the early 1950’s due to a loss of habitat. Large wildfires in the early 1900’s created hundreds of thousands of acres of prime elk winter range by changing the vegetation from conifers to shrub-fields.   • The Yellowstone Elk Herd has gone from 20,000 to 6,500.
  • The Gallatin Valley herd in Montana has gone from 1,500 to 200 in just 3 years.

I had one heck of an experience this past Friday. I was walking into an area I spotted 5 bulls last weekend when wolves started howling, growling and snarling about 300 yds away in the timber below me. It was just getting light so, I hung out for a while hoping to get a look at the wolves. Nothing appeared so, thinking that there were probably no elk in this spot, I headed back to the truck. Time after time I see legislators struggling to balance the demands of endangered and threatened species with the economic impacts and other effects of these actions on the cultures and industries of a region.

We lost a $30 billion dollar timber industry in the Pacific Northwest with the listing of the spotted owl and in the wake of that loss; states were told they could replace those jobs by building their tourism industries.
