Mexican Wolf Recovery

by Jess Carey, Catron County Wolf Interaction Investigator, New Mexico

Wolves fed upon cow while alive, 20 + pounds of muscle tissue eaten out around back end and pelvis. Wolves leave; cow stressed and tries to birth calf. Calf found half way out dead not fed upon by wolves; cow could not stand and was put down. This is a typical confirmed wolf depredation.

Bridges: A Tale of Two Wolf Books

By Toby Bridges, LOBO WATCH

The first book I ever read about wolves was Farley Mowat’s best seller, Never Cry Wolf.  It was the Fall of 1985, and I was on a self-guided combination mule deer and pronghorn hunt, just south of Buffalo, Wyoming.

New Tester Bill will use Wolves to destroy States

by Ed Berry

Predictably, Montana Senator Tester has again abandoned his Montana voters. He is now working with the Obama Administration to pass his Tester-Boxer Wildlife Bill S1470 that will take away state’s rights to manage their own wildlife. The bill will give the Federal government full control of state wildlife management.

WGL Wolf Population Will NOT Come Off Endangered List

by Tom Remington, Black Bear Blog

Ranchers and sportsmen seem excited at the premise that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will lift Federal protections of wolves, remove them from the list of endangered species and put management in the hands of the states.

Beers: Boot the US Fish and Wildlife OUT of the States

by Jim Beers

HOW FAR WE’VE SUNK

According to the Reno Gazette Journal on 3 December:

“Nevada wildlife commissioners are scheduled today to discuss the possibility of adopting a regulation, at least temporarily, that would change the gray wolf’s official status from a protected game animal to an unprotected one — the same as coyotes and skunks, which can be shot at any time.”

Fanning: It’s about Who Determines Wolf Densities

by Robert Fanning

It’s not about “loves wolves — hates wolves.” It’s about wolf densities and who gets to decide them ….the brainwashed & emotionally intoxicated urban masses or those in rural areas who have had extreme & destructive wolf densities forced upon them.

Remington: In Wolf Wars The Divide Widens

by Tom Remington – November 27, 2010

There are many things that can be said about gray wolves in America but the one issue that is becoming front and center is that the divide that separates wolf lovers from wolf haters is growing. Where once it was thought that compromise somewhere by someone would ease the pain and solve a problem, now it is apparent that compromise has become a very nasty word.

Calisterio: Wolves in my Driveway

by Scott Rockholm, as told by his friend, Karen Calisterio

Saturday, November 27, 2010, about 4:35 pm, 1519 Moses Mountain Road, Tensed, Idaho 83870. It was near dusk, snowing and snow covered the ground. I and my husband, Ed Calisterio, arrived home from Coeur d’Alene to find our driveway too deep in snow to drive our car in without risking getting stuck.

Wolf Population Growth

Wolves first began colonizing northwest Montana near Glacier National Park in the early 1980s.
Wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park and the central Idaho wilderness in 1995 and 1996.
Since then, the Montana wolf population has increased through natural reproduction and dispersal into new areas.

Buckley: Wolves near our Campground

by Laura Z. Buckley

In the summer of 2009, we planned a week long camping trip at Takhlakh Lake, near Mt. Adams in Washington State.

Our first night (Monday or Tuesday) was quiet and the next day we hiked around the lake, through the prairie and a short distance up the mountain. There weren’t many people so we allowed our dog (a black lab) to run free on the trails.

Wolf Kill in Salmon Idaho

by Ed Berry

A wolf pack had been terrorizing campers. Had a couple of guys treed in their pickup cab all night at Colson Creek campground. They are not afraid of humans or campsites.

Heidi Leavitt, who lives near Salmon, Idaho, down river at Spring Creek, told people in the store that a wolf pack was running around their place and that she would try to shoot one.

Aaron Schekk: My Wolf Story

by Aaron Schekk

Two years ago I was bow hunting for elk in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, close to the forest fringe.  Sitting in my blind calling, elk scent heavily sprayed on my way in to cover up my scent from the truck to my hunting spot.  Just about dusk and I see two heads poke out from the hill top, basically on the same line I took to come in.

Marbut: Tenth amendment trumps Commerce Clause and ESA

by Gary Marbut

Wolf introduction under the Endangered Species Act is based on the power of Congress to “regulate commerce … among the states,” the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

However, this application of Commerce Clause power is in conflict with the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution.

Article first published online: 7 OCT 2010, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-294X.2010.04770.x

Probably no conservation genetics issue is currently more controversial than the question of whether grey wolves (Canis lupus) in the Northern Rockies have recovered to genetically effective levels.

The State of Montana, it’s Governor and Legislators, have taken the wolf issue seriously and head-on.  1). Fanning: Yellowstone is Dying

By Robert Fanning, Jr.

Wolf recovery is about land and business confiscation.

The issue 20 or 30 years ago was whether to have wolves introduced into the Yellowstone Ecosystem. That is no longer the issue; NOW, the issue is how many wolves and who decides.

Beers: “Science” as Dogma

by Jim Beers

A federal Wildlife Refuge in north central Montana that was once famous for pheasant hunting is steadily ridding the refuge of pheasants. Russian olive, a medium size tree that once spotted the refuge, has been cut down and piled in heaps. This shrub is an important winter cover for pheasants (especially during blizzards) and the fruit is a preferred food for pheasants as well as sharp-tail grouse, cedar waxwings, robins, grosbeaks, quail, and elk (per the [...]

Beers: Two Lessons From Montana

by Jim Beers

Lesson #1:

While bouncing over dusty Montana dirt roads recently in search of wily sharptails, Hungarian partridges, and sage grouse a humorous example of (federal) governmental “do as I say, not as I do” occurred to me.

Most of Montana, like most of the West, is a patchwork-hodgepodge of public/private land ownership.  Bureau of Land Management, National Forest, National Park, and National Wildlife Refuge lands abut the County and State roads along with ranchers, farmers, retirees, and other rural residents.

Ryan: Report on Congressman Rehberg’s Wolf Meeting

by Clarice Ryan

Fred Hodgeboom and I were at the Congressman Rehberg WOLF meeting October 6, 2010.  Senator Bruce Tutvedt did an excellent job of presiding.  It was well attended with probably 150 – 200 people there..  Although MFMU had not been aware of this upcoming meeting when we started planning a Wolf meeting scheduled for Oct. 25, we were able to distribute notices for it yesterday. See this announcement.

Rehberg: Wolf Management

This is from Congressman Rehberg’s website:

The people I’m hearing from at public meetings around Montana are pretty steamed about this decision.  It’s become crystal clear that the current regulatory framework just isn’t getting the job done, and Montana’s ag producers and sportsmen and women are paying the price.

After hearing from thousands of you over the past several weeks at listening sessions and through the internet, I recognize that the frustration is well past the boiling point and federal legislation is likely necessary.  It’s time to start working toward a solution that works for Montanans, not just powerful out-of-state interest groups. – Congressman Rehberg

Eastman: Decline of elk and elk depredation by wolves

By Gene Eastman

There are several factors that have contributed to the elk population crash. There has been a steady decline from the early 1950’s due to a loss of habitat. Large wildfires in the early 1900’s created hundreds of thousands of acres of prime elk winter range by changing the vegetation from conifers to shrub-fields. The result was a large increase in elk that peaked in the mid 1900’s.

Beers: Brawling in a Barroom Wolves and Human Health

By Jim Beers, from US Observer

It is a simple rule of life that when brawling in a barroom, there are no rules.  It is with this simple rule in mind that I bring to your attention to a minor, yet potentially major, aspect of the known biology of a little recognized species of tapeworm that infects wolves and dogs.

Wolves Eat Cattle Alive

by David Christianson

I had one heck of an experience this past Friday. I was walking into an area I spotted 5 bulls last weekend when wolves started howling, growling and snarling about 300 yds away in the timber below me. It was just getting light so, I hung out for a while hoping to get a look at the wolves. Nothing appeared so, thinking that there were probably no elk in this spot, I headed back to the truck. Franklin: Who Has Custody Of Wildlife – The Feds Or The States?

Testimony on HB 283 before Montana House Natural Resources Committee

Time after time I see legislators struggling to balance the demands of endangered and threatened species with the economic impacts and other effects of these actions on the cultures and industries of a region.

We lost a $30 billion dollar timber industry in the Pacific Northwest with the listing of the spotted owl and in the wake of that loss; states were told they could [...]
